Kensei, Army, Zamboanga remain unscathed in Clark

BRUNEI’s Kensei, the Philippine Army and Zamboanga City beat their respective opponents on Monday to find themselves sharing the Men’s Open lead of the Cebuana Lhuillier Summer Grandslam National Softball Open in Clarkfield, Pampanga.

Veteran Blu Boy Apol Rosales, playing as an import for Kensei, hit a pair of home runs in his team’s 4-0 shutout of Rizal Technological University, while Army came up with another explosive performance this time at the expense of Salazar Institute of Technology-Cebu, 7-2.

Zamboanga City, which edged Zamboanga on Sunday afternoon, provided the excitement in the morning games by edging Air Force, 2-1.

“Malaki ang chance naming pumasok sa finals,” said Zamboanga coach Felipe Salcedo.

In the Women’s Open, University of the East, with Blu Girl Joy Lasquite as its playing coach, scored back-to-back wins-over RTU, 8-4, on Sunday, and over West Java from Indonesia, 7-1, on Monday to lead the division.

Adamson Alumni joined the winners’ circle with an impressive 13-2 beating of visiting Papua Province team from Indonesia. The Adamson Alumni team played defending champion Adamson University in the club division late Monday.

Meanwhile, Papua, powered by Blu Girls Esmeralda Tayag and Dione Macasu, rebounded from its opening-day loss with a 7-3 victory over RTU, which occupied the bottom at 0-2, together with the West Java team.

In the men’s club competition of the tournament sponsored by Cebuana Lhuillier, Phiten, Cebuana Pera Padala, Le Soleil de Boracay, Cebuana Lhuillier Bank, Just Jewels, Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, TJ Hotdogs, Purefoods Chicken Nuggets, Hungry Juan, Department of Toursim Region 3 and hosted by the Clark Development Corp., Laguna nipped Bulacan, 6-5, while reigning champion Marikina scored an 8-0 shutout of Pampanga.
