Cebuana Lhuillier Open: UE completes sweep, meet Adamson in finals

CLARK, Pampanga -- University of the East completed a sweep of the elimination round in the 2012 Cebuana Lhuillier Summer Grand Slam National Softball Open.

Playing with aplomb throughout, the Lady Warriors shut out the visiting Papua Province team, 7-0, to complete a five-game sweep of the elimination round.

UE will meet the Adamson Alumni team in a championship match tomorrow.

UE peppered the Indonesians right from the bottom of the first inning with four runs that started with a hit by Marlyn Francisco, sending Jennifer Singh to home plate, UE’s batters exploded again with three more runs in the fifth inning to finish the game in regulation.

The Adamson Alumni team, meanwhile, formalized its seat in the finals with a hard earned 3-0 win over Rizal Technological University.

Adamson scored its first run in the second inning by Rizza Bernardino courtesy of an RBI by Karen Aribal, but it was only in the top of the sixth inning , the score still at 1 - 0 and after a tongue -lashing from coach Ana Santiago that the alumni team buckled down to work , scoring two runs by Emma Dehita and Elma Parohinog.

UAAP champion Adamson University will meet the Papua Province team for third place with the Indonesians parading the Blu Girls duo of Esmeralda Tayag and Dione Macasu in its line-up.

The men’s division of the tournament, also sponsored by Cebuana Pera Padala, Just Jewels, Cebuana Lhuillier Bank, Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, Phiten, Le Soleil de Boracay, TJ Hotdogs, Purefoods Chicken Nuggets, Hungry Juan, Smokey’s Sausages, D.O.T. Region 3, and hosted by the Clark Development Corporation, is all muddled up with five teams fighting for the top slots where the first and second- placed teams automatically meet for the championship tomorrow.

Philippine Air Force nipped Zamboanga, 2-1 to take the lead with a 5-1 win-loss slate, followed by Kensei of Brunei which brought down Philippine Army, 8-2, for a 4-1 win-loss record.

Philippne Army and Zamboanga City are tied at 4-2 following Army’s loss to Kensei.

Zamboanga was waylaid by Philippine Navy-General Trias, 3-1.

RTU is still alive with its 3 -2 record but must win all its remaining games to stay in contention.
