Hitters took the center stage yesterday Adamson and University of the East cruised to their second straight triumph in the Cebuana Lhuillier National Intercollegiate women’s softball championship at the Rosario Sports Complex in Pasig City.

Pitcher Rizza Bernardino aided her superb pitching by going 2-for-2 with an RBI double in a three-run first inning to propel the defending champion Lady Falcons to a 5-0 blanking of University of the Philippines.

On the other hand, shortstop Marlyn Francisco smashed a two-run homer to highlight a three-run fifth as the Lady Warriors railed from a two-run deficit to defeat Ateneo, 6-2.

Adamson and UE, last year’s finalists, improved to similar 2-0 records in the tournament sponsored by Cebuana Lhuillier, Cebuana Pera Padala, Le Soleil de Boracay, Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, Just Jewels and Phiten.

La Salle rightfielder Gomez, meanwhile, smashed two homers as La Salle dominated St. Louis University of Baguio City, 16-6, in a game that lasted just three innings.

The Lady Archers bounced back from a 7-0 loss to Rizal Technological University on Monday. The loss was the second straight for the Baguio lasses, who also bowed to Adamson, 0-29, Monday, also in an abbreviated three-inning contest.

Bernardino’s extra base hit that flew almost and hit the right field wall of the rotting ballpark, site of the 2000 World men’s Championship, sent Adamson catcher Elvie Enterina, who had earlier boarded on a fielder’s choice, across the plate standing, giving coach Ana Santiago’s girls a 2-0 advantage.

A play earlier, designated player Analie Benjamin singled home left fielder first base on a single and took second on an error.

The event is sponsored by Cebuana Lhuillier, Cebuana Pera Padala, Le Soleil de Boracay, Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, Just Jewels and Phiten.
