NU nips CLSU in Women’s softball

National University (NU) rose from the grave to salvage a 7-6 victory over a fighting Central Luzon State University (CLSU) side, as the Lady Bulldogs stood a chance of barging into the medal play for the first time in school’s history on Saturday in the Cebuana Lhuillier National Intercollegiate Women’s Softball Championship at the Rosario Sports Complex in Pasig City.

NU, known previously as a source of big-time baseball players even during the time of matriarch Leticia “Mommy” Paguia, needed a tiebreaker in the eighth and extra inning in subduing the CLSU softbelles after losing what looked like a safe 5-0 lead going into the seventh and last frame.

The win completed the Lady Bulldogs’ streak of three straight triumphs that tied them with the University of Santo Tomas (UST) and Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), all toting similar 3-1 win-loss slate each after four games in the five-team Group B.

NU battles PUP in the elimination round’s final playing day today with the winner to be rewarded with a seat in the Final Four in their bracket.

The University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigresses were still playing winless Ateneo in yesterday’s nightcap but looks a cinch to earn either the first or second semifinals berth. A win over PUP hands UST the top spot in the group

A loss sends the Tigresses in a deadlock with the loser of the NU-PUP make-or-break match up. And since coach Sandy Barredo’s girls beat both NU and PUP earlier in the eliminations, UST gets the seat via the winner over the other rule.

The crossover semifinals format pits the no.1 team in Group A after the eliminations, which is the defending champion Adamson University, against the second best team in Group A, which. The best squad in Group B battles the no. 2 team in Group A, which is the Rizal Technological University.
