World Cup of Softball: Blu Girls beat world No. 10 Mexico

MANILA, July 9 -- The Philippine Blu Girls on Saturday crushed world No. 10 Mexico, 4-2, in the ongoing World Cup of Softball XII at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex in the state of Oklahoma, United States.

The win boosted the morale of the Blu Girls after a five-game skid in the world softball tourney.

In a cable report by Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPHIL), Francesca Altomonte homered to centerfield and drove in runner Reese Gueverra from first to give the 17th-ranked Pinays a two-run cushion on their way to posting their second win against five losses in the eight-team tourney.

“The Blu Girls have been putting a great fight against some tough rivals in the World Cup. Their performance has proven that they are ready to face the toughest and are continuously improving to prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” said AsaPhil president and Cebuana Lhuillier president/CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier.

The Filipinas earlier stunned the No. 4 Australians, 7-5, in the opening day but dropped their next five matches. The Pinays and the Mexicans face off again in the ranking match Sunday noon (early Monday in Manila).

Altomonte had two RBIs and one run on a 2-for-3 batting clip to lead the offense.

Sierra Lange pitched a seven-hitter, allowing two runs and striking out four, in a no-relief job to earn the win.

The Pinay softbelles jumped the gun on Mexico in the top of the second with Angelie Ursabia sending Kailey Cuico home on a single. Skylynne Eliazar doubled the lead as she reached the plate off a fielder’s choice.

But Mexico quickly drew level in bottom second, courtesy of Sierra Rodriguez’ run-scoring ground ball single and Stefania Aradilla’s sacrifice fly.

The Blu Girls will next see action in the Canada Cup International Softball Championship in Surrey, British Columbia where it will clash with Pakistan and host Canada on July 11, and Chinese Taipei on July 12 at Softball City.

The other members of the team are Gabrielle Maurice, Dani Gilmore, Chelsea Suitos, Garie Blando, Hailey Decker, Riflayca Basa, Mary Luisse Garde, Cristy Roa, Dione Macasu, Arianne Vallestero, Ma. Celestine Palma, Lorna Adorable, Shaira Damasing, Mia Macapagal, Reese Guevarra, Riezel Calumbres, Lovely Arago, and Lyca Basa. (Primo P. Agatep/PNA)
